A Landover woman has been accused of breaking into a home and trying to kill a young child.
Twenty-six-year-old Helen Marie Newsome has been charged with first-degree attempted murder and remains in custody in the Prince George’s County jail on a $500,000 bond.
Police said that about 8 a.m., Saturday, Newsome broke into a home in the 6700 block of Munsey in Landover, and crept into a bedroom where a young boy was sleeping. She then grabbed a pillow and placed it over the child’s head and began striking the boy in the head with a weapon.
Despite the injuries, the child was able to escape and run outside to a neighbor’s home for help, police said. The child received treatment at the hospital for head injuries and has been released.
Investigators learned that Newsome had previously been in a romantic relationship with the victim’s father. Police officers arrested Newsome at her home later that morning. She has admitted her involvement in the assault, police said.
