A former University of Maryland student was sentenced to five years in prison for trying to set up a sexual encounter with a 12-year-old girl with a man who turned out to be a undercover detective.
At the time of his arrest in March, 19-year-old freshman Akshay Rajshekar was awaiting trail in a separate child pornography case.
According to federal prosecutors in D.C., Rajshekar answered a Craigslist advertisement in March posted by a man who told Rajshekar that he was into incest and was willing to share his daughter with Rajshekar.
The student then sent six pornographic images to the undercover detectives in a file called “Kindergarten.”
Court documents described how Rajshekar walked across the College Park campus between classes while discussing final plans to take the Metro to D.C. to have sex with the girl and her father.
It turns out he was talking to a D.C. police detective, and was arrested after he showed up at the pre-arranged meeting place in Washington.
Rajshekar, a freshman from Salisbury, Md., was already facing 2012 charges of possession and distribution of child pornography following an investigation by the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office. He had been indicted and arrested in November 2012, released on bond and allowed to return to school.
One of the two child pornography counts in Tuesday plea agreement covers that matter, and the Office of the State’s Attorney for Wicomico County agreed to dismiss the pending case in Wicomico County at the time of the defendant’s sentencing.
