Police identify person killed in police-shooting as D.C. teenager

D.C. police have identified the person killed in a shootout with officers in the Trinidad neighborhood as 19-year-old Darius Jamal Murphy.

Murphy, of Northeast Washington, was confronted by members of the Metropolitan Police Department’s gun recovery unit at about 9 p.m. Tuesday in the 1300 block of Queen Street Northeast. Police said Murphy produced a handgun and fired at the officers, striking one of them.

The officers returned fire and fatally shot the teen. He was taken to a hospital where he died. The wounded officer was taken to a hospital and released.

The police department’s internal affairs division is conducting the investigation.
