A man wanted in the slaying of a 19-year-old D.C. woman was shot and killed in a gun battle with police on K Street, authorities said.
Officers received a citizen tip that about the location of a suspect in the Feb. 27 murder of Tykia Dickerson. The teenager was shot dead in the 3600 block of Jay Street NE during a weekend in which six people were killed.
Members of the fugitive task force tracked the suspect to an apartment at K Street NW and North Capitol Street on Tuesday, police said.
Members of the Capital Area Region Fugitive Task Force went to arrest the man at about 6:15 a.m Tuesday, but he came out of the apartment, pulled out a handgun and opened fire, police said. The officers returned fire and killed the man.
Police have identified the suspect as 19-year-old Daquan Hendrix, of Hyattsville. No officers were injured. Internal affairs is investigating the shooting.
“While this is not the outcome we hoped for,” said D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier, “we sincerely appreciate the support and assistance provided by the Sixth District community in bringing this case to closure.”
